Become Your Brand: Nicole Decandas and the Power of Affirmation

The saying goes that a rolling stone gathers no moss. Well, the same can be said of a certain literary rock star who stays in perpetual motion: author Nicole Decandas. That is to say, between both of our crazy schedules, we were determined to find a time between hu$tles and finally synched up on the eve of her book release. And, true to form, as we spoke, she was multitasking, filling out thank-you cards and awaiting a conference call. I’d expect nothing less.

For the past year, each time I’ve seen Nicole, she was in her uniform: a black ballcap and t-shirt, both announcing her as the embodiment of and walking billboard for her brand. Even while casually chopping it up on a pleasant April evening, her shirt stated in block letters and left no question as to what she was all about: affirmations. Hell, for all we know, she may have designed her own set of pajamas sporting her logo…

Here’s a snippet from the interview:

Don: “Congratulations on the completion of your project. What’s the title?”

Nicole: “Thanks. Well, the project is just beginning but the book is called I Affirm Today.

D: “Catchy. What’s it about?”

N: “Glad you asked. When it comes to affirmations being used to achieve your goals, it’s not puffery or some type of…kumbaya, unicorns, rainbows, and fluffy stuff. It can actually happen. And I think that what’s taken place over the last few years, with self-help books and things of that nature, is that people kind of feel let down. They think that none of it pertains to them and it’s not achievable.”

D: “Too lofty and out of reach, I guess?”

N: “Sometimes, yes. They go through life with happenstance, hoping things just fall their way, but everything is systematic. If you have a system in place and are working toward something, inevitably, you’re going to get an end result. I think that more people need to know that they have to discover a process for themselves, whether it’s my process in its entirety…or whether you take in pieces—I talk about that in the book—and figure out what good for you to utilize and work through it. You need to find a process for your life in order to achieve the things you want to obtain.”

Nicole went on to explain that the book marked the launch of an entire project, which will also include workbooks, training seminars, and speaking engagements. We spoke about her making her caps and tees, bearing quotes and motifs from her book, available for purchase. I just hope I can find a shirt large enough for this big guy, because I definitely plan to support while looking cool doing it.
